GO Mom!

February 28, 2011 § 3 Comments

I’ve been missing from the blog world for a few days, but that’s because I’ve been keeping promises to myself and working towards finishing my thesis. I must say it feels really good to actually make some significant progress!

In other news, my Mama participated in the Tampa Bay Gasparilla Distance Classic this past weekend. I am so proud of her 🙂

They had a great view of the sunrise!

I wish I could’ve been there to cheer her on!

Uncharted Territory

Milestone day today! Up to this point the furthest I’d ran was 13.1 miles, during the November 1/2 marathon.

Today as part of my full marathon training I ran 14 miles! It was nice and overcast so it was a pleasant run. I got to try out my new running shoes too & they were great!

They are the Brooks Adrenaline GTS Series 11.

I’d had my Asics 2150 since November and they held up well, but I’m pretty sure they were a half size too small. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s because of their improper fit that I’ve lost 3 poor little toenails since I’ve had them 😦

After the Great Aloha Run I had some serious blue nails and it was pretty much the grossest thing ever. I am a serious wuss when it comes to first aid.

But aside from the toe drama, my new shoes were great, and I think I might just like them better than Asics!

Concentrate, Concentrate, Concentrate!

That is my mantra for the day- or for my life…

I have been a zombie all day today!

This morning I went to my first pottery class.

Throwing clay on a wheel is a lot harder than it looks and it takes some serious upper body strength! I brought my camera to class, but was so caught up in the instruction (not to mention covered in clay) that I did not take any pictures.

When I got home I ate some lunch and zonked out for 2 & 1/2 hours! I don’t nap very often but I just felt exhausted today.

As of now I am staring at my inspiration/motivation board trying to force myself to concentrate on the work I need to get done.

Anyone have any tips on concentration and getting seemingly impossible projects done?

It’s funny because I have a 14 mile training run scheduled for this week, and compared to my school work running 14 miles doesn’t even seem like a big deal. A few years ago, had you suggested I run 14 miles in one day I would have looked at you like you had two heads. Today though I look forward to long runs as a time to clear my head and not stress over deadlines and details.

Great Aloha Run 2011

Here I am at the start line – freaking out a little bit that my bib number was so close to the start line. There were 20,000 something people behind me, and I certainly didn’t want to get trampled!

For a race taking place in Hawaii it wasn’t really the most picturesque course, but we did get to run along side military formations, so that was different – and motivating!

It felt so weird running on some of Oahu’s major roads. Usually this road is backed up with bumper to bumper traffic. This time it was only foot traffic!

There were midde school band kids along the race course playing their instruments.

I finished at exactly 1:17 1:16:26 according to official race results. Not a PR, but overall I was just looking to have fun at this HUGE 8.1 mile race!

The race ended at The Aloha stadium – where the NFL Pro-Bowl is held.

Do you think I have enough gear on? Ha, I felt a little silly at first for wearing my camelback, because no one else had one on – but about halfway through when the humidity really set in I was super happy to have my own water on hand.

Overall a good race. I hope next year I can get Don to run it with me!

Pre-Race Checklist

February 21, 2011 § 4 Comments

I’m getting my race gear ready the night before since I’m going to be getting up earrrrly in the morning. Since the race starts and ends at two separate locations, I have to drive my car to the finish line and take a shuttle bus to the starting line. The race starts at 7am which means they’re advising parking your car at 4am in order to beat the traffic – there are over 25,000 participants!

And now for the Pre-Race Checklist. I hope I’m not forgetting anything!

  • Race Number (and safety pins)
  • Race ID tag and zip ties
  • Camelback
  • Energy Gels (Sharkies)
  • Camera
  • Mini sweat towel
  • i-pod
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Knee brace
  • Sunglasses
  • Ion bracelet
  • ID & cash

and last but not least

  • Pre-race manicure – I like to have something girly to balance out the sporty 😉 (In Kathrine Switzer’s book Marathon Woman, she talks about wearing a ribbon in her hair at the 1974 New York Marathon to set herself apart from the boys.)

Hopefully it’ll be a fun race. I’m not really setting a time goal, I’d just like to meet some new friends and enjoy my first race in Hawaii!

Check out these awesome posters promoting healthy living and environmental awareness.

I found them at the Etsy store joeseppi.

Only $12 per poster. I’m definitely getting a few of these to frame for the kitchen!

They also have a website where you can view posters from previous years at

Runner’s Toes

12.6 miles today, woo hoo! They were certainly a slow 12 .6 miles, but I’m not really pushing myself for speed on my first full marathon.

After I finished I headed over to the Diamond Head Cove Health Bar to try out one of their Acai Bowls. Unfortunately, I wasn’t too impressed. First of all it was really stinking expensive – $9.80, and I didn’t realize they only accepted cash so I had to use their ATM (which charged me $2) so it ended up being a $12 smoothie! So for a $12 smoothie I had really high expectations. It ended up tasting super sweet (so if you like really sweet stuff you might love it) and I’m not a big sweets person so I ate about 1/4 and put the rest in the freezer because I couldn’t bear to throw it away! I don’t know if I’ll go back or not. They have some salads and wraps on their menu that look appetizing (and cost less than the Acai smoothie) so maybe I’ll give them a second chance.

On another note – a question for all the girly runners out there. Do you get pedicures when marathon training? My poor toes are looking blistered and blue and I wear flip flops or sandals ALL the time, but I feel like getting a pedicure is a waste because it will only last a few days with training. What do you gals do to keep your feet looking pretty while training?
